This project started after I finished my master’s and took about 4 months. It is a music generator located at algorithmictrap.com. The idea is best explained by clicking the link in the previous sentence but just in case you don't want to, I’ll give you the broad strokes here. On the site there is a song that has never been heard before and was generated by a program. The song will cease to exist once a timer runs out and whoever downloads it gets to keep all of the rights to said song. Below you’ll see the generators interface on the site.
Since its release it has been used all over the world by people from all walks of life. It was made possible with a grant from the Icelandic Student Innovation Fund. Just like Gloomy vibes, my advisors were Ríkharður H. Friðriksson and Steindór Grétar Kristinsson. My father did all the web development. The generator itself is written in Supercollider.
If you read about a work of mine titled "Gloomy Vibes" you’ll be introduced to a host of different music generators I made during my time at IUA. Building Algorithmic Trap started immediately after graduation so there is very little information here about what led up to it. However, there is one generator that is not mentioned elsewhere on this site which functions like a very small version of Algorithmic Trap.
Unlike the other music generators, this one is readily available for download here. The reason it is the only generator I offer people to download has to do with how it is set up. Other generators that I’ve created require a lot of complex setting up in order to run them correctly. This one only requires Supercollider, the Composers Tool Kit quark and changing the path for the program's output. It doesn’t have an interface so if you want to use it, you must learn a bit of Small Talk. I don't think it is fair to say that the generator outputs hardstyle techno, as indicated by its name. The generator was written in about a week and as I said earlier, functions like a tiny version of Algorithmic Trap.

Algorithmic Trap went live in the fall of 2020. Since then I’ve been acquainting myself with marketing and learned the skills needed to make the site you are currently on. What follows is a list of things related to Algorithmic Trap that came into being after it went live.
When Algorithmic Trap was originally released a lot of people wanted it to output midi and stems. That’s basically the notes and recordings of each individual instrument. Makes sense. If you like something the generator outputs but think you can improve on it, you’ll have to be able to take it apart. I’ve made an album this way called Bubble. The whole album is made by importing the midi and stems from Algorithmic Trap songs I like into Ableton Live and then messing around with them.

I got asked to be on the radio because of Algorithmic Trap. Here is the interview, in Icelandic. I also spoke about the project at my alma mater, it is in english and can be found here. Since its release there have been a lot of different uses for Algorithmic Trap. I was very happy to hear that IUA used it in the first 2 episodes of their podcast, titled “Músíkmínútur”. It is in Icelandic and can be found here. If you want to know more about my generative work please read the section titled Gloomy Vibes. Thanks for reading about my works and if you want to reach out to me you can do so by going back to the “home” page.
